Home automation-WOW Alexa

Alexa lowrez

I tried automating my home some twelve years ago. It was a disaster so I eventually removed all of the hardware and software that never worked well.

A couple of years ago I tried home automation again. The system from Apple it wasn’t quite as bad. I do a lot of cooking so I use the timer function often. About half the time when I tried to start the timer my Apple Watch would send the message “Wait I’ll tap you when I’m ready”. The only way to get it to work was say, “Set timer to five minutes and thirty seconds you stupid piece of s***”. Then the timer would start but the full message including “you stupid piece of s***” would even show up. But the timer would start. It may seem silly but I don’t like to cuss even at a machine. It was frustrating!

Alexz2 lowrezI didn’t give up but I did try something different for me. In the last year I’ve seen a lot of email from Amazon about their echo system so I chose to give it a try. Late Tuesday I received the Echo Plus I ordered from Amazon. What a difference!

When I set it up after supper I was amazed how easy it was. In half an hour I had a workable home automation system going. I had to force myself to go to bed and stop playing.

In twenty-four hours I still haven’t had to cuss at Alexa. I’ve found things I don’t like hearing someone’s voice when I requested instrumental blues music. That is a minor glitch I am having a blast exploring Alexa. It is fun and easy!

How I speak without talking

Computers have made things a lot easier for me to deal with life’s challenges. One thing that has come up as I age is how to talk to people. My voice was never been good but as I’ve gotten older it is become harder to understand.

How I talk #1 low rezI found this app called Speak in Apple’s App store called Speak. Now I can let my iPad talk for me!

Sometimes though the technology path seems like two steps forward and one back.

In Oculus (1) lowrezRecently I started testing a VR world or set of experiences some people call it one thing and someone else calls it the other. I just call it Sansar. But to use it in virtual reality mode you need to talk into the headset’s microphone to communicate so opps.

If use Sansar in Desktop mode you can type chat. Problem with that is only other Desktop users and not VR users can see what you type.

Hay, Linden Labs put a user editable macro on a controller key. User editable because sometimes you have more to say than just “Hi”. I also want to say, “Hi, this is Willow. I talk like Stephen Hawking so it’s very slow and I must see my iPad and use my hands. That is not easy in a HMD and controllers. So please don’t be offended when I don’t answer back.” After all I don’t want to be rude and not answer back at all when someone say “Hello”. That wouldn’t be very sociable.

Otherwise it will mean back to passing notes like we did in school. If we can exchange attachments with other users in the September release.

Any other suggestions please leave them in a comment.

BTW you may notice I’m bald in the picture. That’s from the brain surgery and all the drugs the doctors gave me. That is my wig on the left. So, note HMD’s do not work well with wigs or glasses and I wear both.
