Linden Lab shoots itself in the foot again-expansion

shoot-yourself-in-the-foot1Wagner James Au wrote me asking for more details about the original Linden Lab shoots itself in the foot again post. My answer got a little long so I chose to make it a whole post.

The official Linden lab store requirements are at

The significant part of the above is, “As of October 2, 2017, you’ll need to have a credit card on file for your account in order to sell in the Sansar Store.”

Not an unreasonable requirement. But the policy change is not implemented evenly. Plus, it was announced widely on September 27 five days from the implementation date. Just a very unreasonably short amount of time.

Then at a meetup held in Sansar on September 27th it was reportedly said by a Linden Lab employee,

“The October 2nd deadline applies to you only if you joined Sansar on or after the open creator beta launch of July 31st, 2017. People who were part of the closed Sansar beta have Creator-level privileges until the end of October, 2017, and they would not be affected immediately by this change in policies for the Sansar Store. But they would be affected after October 31st, 2017.”

So, unless you are one of the selected few you have you only five days to decide. But if you are one of the select group you get a month.

This policy of treating certain users with special perks while penalizing the common users could have been avoided by the simple expedient of making the policy implementation date the for all users October 31.

Some may think this is an overreaction but I grew up part of the time in the Jim Crow South and I’ve seen the devastating effects of treating one group differently. It does something to you when your black friend can only get a beer if he drinks it in the alley behind the bar.
